On October 24 we invited you to come celebrate creativity and life enrichment at Meaningful Expressions: An Art Show to Benefit Resthaven. We asked 15 artists with a heart for Resthaven’s mission to share their creativity. Our own dining team catered with wine and hors d’oeuvre pairings that demonstrated a different form of creativity!
At this fundraiser, we highlighted aspects of our life enrichment program including the flowers, which were arranged by residents at the Care Center during their weekly flower arranging activity. Life enrichment programming is central to Resthaven’s dedication to providing quality care to all.
A study conducted by University of California found that 43% of seniors said they felt lonely even if they didn’t live alone. To remain healthy and vibrant, seniors need to remain connected to their community, maintain social connections, and continue to pursue interests and hobbies. Resthaven works hard to deliver these opportunities.
Life Enrichment programming at Resthaven is a primary way for our residents to maintain their physical, cognitive, spiritual and social skills all while engaging in activities they enjoy. Participating in our programs noticeably reduces symptoms of depression and provides an avenue for residents to continue to be connected to their peers, family and the community. While residents’ physical needs may increase, we know that consideration of their whole person is important for a meaningful life. The different programs and activities at the Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Skilled Nursing levels may look different based on ability, but they all meet the pillars of social, physical, spiritual, and mental fulfillment.
All this is possible through your donations and a robust volunteer program. In the summer of 2019, Resthaven residents went to locations like the Holland Bowl Mill, Windmill Island, DeGraaf Nature Center, and the Holland Farmer’s Market. Our Life Enrichment staff is able to plan and facilitate outings like this because of Resthaven’s amazing pool of volunteers. As of October 1, volunteers have given over 8,000 hours to Resthaven – most of which has been spent directly with residents in the Life Enrichment programs. Our volunteers help with daily activities like manicures, bingo, book clubs, exercise, and music therapy. If you would like to be a part of enriching the lives of older adults through volunteering, reach out to Natalie at [email protected]. Thank you to all who support Resthaven’s mission to care for older adults with love and compassion.
