Rev. Leigh Boelkins Van Kempen
“While they were eating, he took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it and gave it to them…then he took a cup and after giving thanks he gave it to them…” (Mark 14: 22, 23)
Summertime in West Michigan gives us an opportunity for picnics! That is true at Resthaven too. Whether at the Warm Friend, Maple Woods or the Care Center, our staff members make it possible for our residents to enjoy a meal together, outside in the warm weather. Joining together around a table with picnic food is a delightful summer event!
Gathering around a table is a customary way to experience community and hospitality. It is why we often invite friends and relatives to our home for a meal. And it is one of the ways the Christian church observes community and hospitality as well. Celebrating the Lord’s Supper happens frequently in our area churches. We call it “Communion” because it reminds us of the sense of unity and family we find when we share a common meal.
Unfortunately, many of our residents are no longer able to attend regular worship services in their home congregations. While their church leaders may thoughtfully bring the communion elements to them, our residents may miss gathering, at least figuratively, around the table with others.
Thankfully, we are able to share Communion together in all of our Resthaven residences. While our residents have an opportunity each week to gather with other residents for worship, at least quarterly, those worship services also include the celebration of Communion. When we share the bread and cup, we are knit together as the family of Christ—no matter where we are.
Table Time is quality time. Picnics are a treat. But gathering together around the Lord’s Table is a blessing!
