Resthaven’s independent living community, The Warm Friend, located in downtown Holland, experienced a contained fire overnight in one of its residential apartments. Thanks to the swift response of the Holland Fire Department, the prompt actions of Resthaven team members, and the effectiveness of the building’s fire safety systems, no residents, team members, or emergency personnel were injured.
According to the Holland Fire Marshal’s preliminary report, the fire was caused by a personal electrical device and was not related to the building’s infrastructure. The building’s sprinkler and alarm systems activated immediately, successfully extinguishing the fire and preventing it from spreading.
“We’re incredibly grateful for the quick response and professionalism of the Holland Fire Department and our onsite team,” said Deedre Schuckert, President & CEO of Resthaven. “Most importantly, we are thankful that everyone is safe.”
The sprinkler activation resulted in water damage to several apartments and common areas. A small number of units will be temporarily offline during the restoration process, which is already underway. Residents will continue to reside at The Warm Friend, and aside from localized repairs, should experience minimal disruption during this process.
“The sprinkler system throughout the building operated effectively, smoke alarms activated as expected, and staff responded just as they’ve been trained,” said Bret Groendyke, Fire Marshal for the City of Holland. “Resthaven has safe facilities and maintains them well—there was nothing about this incident that gave me pause.”
