Resthaven, Holland’s only not-for-profit senior living organization, is proud to join organizations around the world in celebrating the United Nations’ International Day of Older Persons. This day recognizes the invaluable contributions of older adults while raising awareness of the opportunities and challenges they face.
The UN has called for action in five critical areas: promoting social inclusion, creating age-friendly environments, improving health and wellness, ensuring financial security, and honoring older adults’ contributions as leaders, educators, and community members. At Resthaven, these priorities are woven into daily life across our continuum of care.
- Social Inclusion: Resthaven partners with local educational institutions to provide intergenerational opportunities, fostering meaningful connections across generations. Within our communities, we offer a wide range of opportunities s that keep residents engaged both inside and outside Resthaven.
- Age-Friendly Environments: Our campuses are thoughtfully designed with older adults in mind, incorporating adaptive technologies, fall prevention measures, and accessible spaces that help residents maintain independence and dignity.
- Health and Wellness: Holistic wellness is at the heart of Resthaven’s mission. Residents receive whole-person care—addressing physical, social, emotional, spiritual, and mental health—through programs and services tailored to individual needs.
- Financial Security & Benevolent Care: Nearly half of Resthaven’s assisted living residents and roughly 70% of residents at the Care Center benefit from benevolent care, ensuring that those who have outlived their financial resources can continue receiving the care they need in a safe and supportive environment. We also host opportunities for residents to learn more about fraud, health benefits, and financial planning.
- Recognizing Contributions: Residents at Resthaven share their gifts as leaders, volunteers, artists, and mentors—continuing to enrich our community and inspiring future generations.
“For 80 years, Resthaven has been committed to caring for older adults with dignity, compassion, and faith,” said Deedre Schuckert, President & CEO of Resthaven. “The International Day of Older Persons affirms the work we do each day to honor our residents and to ensure their needs are met holistically— body, mind, and spirit.”
